Fire Department Field Trip

Do you love a kid who L-O-V-E-S fire trucks? ? I do! Matthew thinks they’re “beautiful,” so I asked the local Fire Department if we could stop by for a visit. I was delighted that the answer was “yes” and that we were able to invite some friends, too!

Our Fire Department Field Trip took place on Thursday, July 15th at 9 a.m. Each family brought something yummy to share with the FD staff as a thank you for their time and efforts.  The firemen were absolutely amazing with the kids, and I am so grateful for their time, patience, and enthusiasm. After the tour, we gathered at our house for some playtime.

Her Drummer Plays the Harmonica…in Reverse

Adelaide’s latest interest is walking backwards. She’s been practicing every day. Sometimes, she likes to play the harmonica while walking backwards. The amusements are endless around here.

If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.” — Henry David Thoreau

What Jesus Wants

In case anyone’s wondering what’s on the mind of Jesus today, Matthew has informed me that Jesus wants Daddy to play with us in the playroom when gets home from work.

Basic Hummus Recipe +

Basic Hummus Recipe +

Ingredients

  • 2 cups canned garbanzo beans, drained
  • 1/3 cup tahini
  • ¼ cup lemon juice
  • ½ to 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cloves garlic, halved

Directions

Place the garbanzo beans, tahini, lemon juice, salt and garlic in a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth. Transfer to a serving bowl and enjoy your hummus!

Variations

  • Drizzle 1 tablespoon olive oil over the hummus and sprinkle with a pinch of paprika and a teaspoon of minced fresh parsley.
  • Try spicing up the hummus by adding ¼ to ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes, ½ to 1 teaspoon ground cumin, and ½ to 1 teaspoon ground coriander.
  • Roasted red peppers or kalamata olives make yummy add-ins or garnishes.

Notes

  • We find it easier to make in the food processor.
  • Sometimes we use jarred minced garlic and/or Real Lemon juice. Not quite as good as fresh, but still yummy.
  • Add a little olive oil while blending if the hummus starts to thicken too much.
  • We eat hummus with pita chips, pita bread, crudités, warm tortillas, tortilla chips, etc. Blue corn tortilla chips go very nicely with this dip.

A Moment of Clarity

A moment of clarity courtesy of Matthew…

I’m changing Adelaide’s diaper while Matthew & I sing one rendition of The Poopy Song. Matthew breaks mid “cha-cha-cha-cha” to explain to his sister, in his most serious tone with his most serious facial expression, that “We don’t eat poopy because it’s DANGEROUS.”

Three Cheers for Her Big Brother!

Our kiddos certainly don’t want for praise, acknowledgment, or encouragement. I was feeding Adelaide her dinner while Mike and Matthew were whipping up some smoothies. (She had a late nap, and, consequently, a late dinner.) Whenever Matthew got a “good job,” “awesome work,” or “way to go,” Adelaide stopped eating to clap for her big brother. 😀
