{"id":249,"date":"2011-03-05T19:23:59","date_gmt":"2011-03-05T19:23:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.messyblessings.com\/garden\/?p=249"},"modified":"2018-08-06T15:18:53","modified_gmt":"2018-08-06T15:18:53","slug":"in-search-of-a-non-poisonous-vine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/messyblessings.com\/garden\/2011\/03\/05\/in-search-of-a-non-poisonous-vine\/","title":{"rendered":"In Search of a Non-Poisonous Vine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu\/earthkind\/plantselector\/detail.php?region=zone_b&amp;plantid=220\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-251\" title=\"coral_honeysuckle\" src=\"http:\/\/messyblessings.com\/garden\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/03\/coral_honeysuckle-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>We were going to plant <a href=\"http:\/\/aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu\/ornamentals\/nativeshrubs\/gelsemiumsemper.htm\">Carolina jessamine<\/a> for our arbor trellis until I read that all parts of the plant are poisonous. \ud83d\ude41\u00a0 Mike and I did some research on our own, but we were having trouble coming up with a viable alternative so I asked a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.messyblessings.com\/garden\/2011\/03\/05\/local-resources-the-dcmga\/\">Denton County Master Gardener<\/a> for a recommendation.<\/p>\n<p>In my opinion, the most important part of the DCMG&#8217;s answer was the explanation that most plants are poisonous (or will at least cause a stomachache) if eaten, so <strong>teach the kids not to eat plants unless Mom &amp; Dad say it&#8217;s okay<\/strong>. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>She also suggested that it might be easier to <strong>avoid  the most toxic plants <\/strong>rather than trying to get  100% safe plants, and two links were provided for reference:<\/p>\n<p>(1) a list of common toxic and non-toxic plants from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wapc.org\/poisons\/plantlist.htm\">Washington state&#8217;s poison center<\/a> (not a complete list), and<\/p>\n<p>(2) a list of <a href=\"http:\/\/eiledonbriards.com\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=17&amp;Itemid=18\">Plants Toxic &amp; Non-Toxic to Dogs<\/a>, with the caveat that there is <strong>no guarantee that what is safe for a Briard is safe for children<\/strong>. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Mike and I compared the suggested lists with a list that Mike generated from the <a href=\"http:\/\/michiganbulb.com\/\">Michigan Bulb Co.&#8217;s website<\/a>, where you can use their &#8220;Plant Digger&#8221; to find plants suited for your Grow Zone, and a list generated by the <a href=\"http:\/\/aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu\/earthkind\/selector\/\">Earth-Kind Plant Selector<\/a> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu\/\">Aggie Horticulture website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After all of that, we finally decided to plant <a href=\"http:\/\/aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu\/earthkind\/plantselector\/detail.php?region=zone_b&amp;plantid=220\">Coral Honeysuckle<\/a> in the planter boxes at the bottom of the arbor. Coral Honeysuckle.
