{"id":132,"date":"2012-01-23T11:13:25","date_gmt":"2012-01-23T17:13:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.messyblessings.com\/faith\/?p=132"},"modified":"2012-01-23T11:13:25","modified_gmt":"2012-01-23T17:13:25","slug":"catholicism-in-relation-to-us-political-isms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/messyblessings.com\/faith\/2012\/01\/23\/catholicism-in-relation-to-us-political-isms\/","title":{"rendered":"Catholicism in relation to US political \u201cisms\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How does one live out their catholic faith while being a member of a modern US political party \u2013 very carefully!<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nHumor aside, it is not always an easy thing to reconcile the teachings of the church with the political ideologies espoused in the current political scene. While I do think that there\u2019s some effort involved, I don\u2019t believe it to be an entirely impossible task.<\/p>\n<p>What got me thing about this was reading about Pope Benedict\u2019s recent homily (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zenit.org\/article-34111?l=english\">http:\/\/www.zenit.org\/article-34111?l=english<\/a>) regarding linked destinies and individualism. In the US individualism is linked to conservatism, which is then linked most closely to the Republican Party. So, if individualism a problem, then Catholics ought to be wary of the political part which espouses those beliefs; however, the problem is that this particular party is also the home of the pro-life position in American politics.<\/p>\n<p>Can a catholic reconcile these positions?
